The Lord Jesus warned his disciples against hypocrisy and fear.  We should be more concerned about inward sin than outward impressions.  More concerned about fearing God than fearing men.

The pharisees were the most religious and upright people of their day.  Yet Jesus pronounced woe on them and the experts who advised them.  Why?

We continue to think about ways in which people evade the challenge of Jesus.  Jesus spoke about matters of the heart: love for God, concern for justice.  But the Pharisees cared only about externals.  Providing they kept outward rules, they were sure they were safe.
