Hating the people we love (14:25)
Jesus said that to be his disciples we must hate even our closest relatives. Did he mean it? Are we really supposed to hurt and harm those we love best?

Perfect happiness in a fallen world?
God's design for family life was perfect. Yet can marriage bring us perfect happiness in a fallen world? Would singleness be preferable? Paul the realist knows that marriage and singleness alike involve trouble and frustration. Yet for the Christian, there can still be contentment.

Invited to the banquet (14:15-23)
The Pharisees were sure that they would be at the banquet of the kingdom. But when the summons arrived, they made excuses. How many folk make the same mistake!
