The Pharisees were chiefly concerned with prohibitions. The less people did on the Sabbath, the happier the Pharisees were. But Jesus saw the Sabbath as an opportunity for strenuous activity, as He pursued His holy mission to take the good news to all Israel.

The Pharisees were determined to keep the law rigorously. But they turned the sabbath into an instrument of misery. Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, is the only one who can enable sinners to use the sabbath as it was intended to be used.
God revealed Himself in the grandeur of the skies. Humans in their folly have rejected that revelation. So God has spoken again: in the powerful words of Scripture.
Jesus's grace was able to transform tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees had not understood that Jesus's coming had brought radical, life-changing grace into the world. Nor could they understand the joy of those who experience that grace. Have we?
