Another year… it seems to me to be a very healthy thing for us as Christians to set times to regularly review what has gone before, to make plans and to set aims for what lies ahead.

Recently I read the autobiography of one of the most famous footballers of all time – Stanley Matthews. A man famed for his silky dribbling skills and ball control, the first ever ‘Footballer of the Year’.

One verse has been often in my mind over the past weeks.  “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart” (Ecclesiastes 7:4)

To drink or not to drink: that is the question.  Over the years, I have been asked many times to give my advice on the subject of alcohol.  May a Christian drink “in moderation” or should we abstain completely?  I was asked the question again a few days ago.  I didn’t have time then to answer the question fully.  So here’s my answer now. 

It depends.  It depends on many things.  It depends on who you are.  And what your circumstances are.  And why you’re drinking.  …

An estimated 30 million across the UK watched England play Germany. World Cup football, Wimbledon tennis… you can’t get away from sport at the moment. Sport is one of our national idols. As a Christian, how should I react to this idolatry?
